nevada
darkening skies dim gray streets to a dusty blue
street lamps frost the sidewalk in medical light
fireflies swim lazily on currents of air and fog that settle
over the town in a sleepy haze; doors click hushed
into their frames, too preoccupied to open to
just another inconvenience
they seek shelter in the frozen food aisle, the lights
inside the freezers shrinking to winking reds
and greens on minimal power, the icy tiles and cold
metal, just another narnia, pushing them out with
the last empty shopping carts and bins of
reduce, reuse, recycle
save a brick-layed tunnel all sprinkled in dirt and sadness
there’s nowhere left to go
